Aroids

Honestly I'm not really sure what to put as a blurb here. What makes an aroid an aroid? The internet does not really seem to have answers for me. A lot of these plants climb on things and live on trees, or crawl along the forest floor. Neat plants!

Golden Pothos

  • Obtained: March 2024
  • Image Last Updated: March 2025
  • Notes: People talk about golden pothos like they are unkillable, but let me tell you I bought a pot with 5 or 6 plants in it and within a month this was the only one that remained!!! Even now I have no idea if I did something wrong or it was already unwell and my timing was bad. I even got it from a nursery I consider pretty reputable too. I've never had any other plant die so fast in my care. Shoutout to this last one though, I guess????

Monstera Borsigiana

  • Obtained: November 2022
  • Image Last Updated: May 2025
  • Notes: The OG Plant. The one that started it all. My sister gave it to me as a single-leaf cutting. It's endured a lot of my Houseplant Novice mistakes. Finally started developing splits in the leaves in Spring of 2024!!!
  • Leaves are looking a little funky in the above picture mostly because of how aggressively the newest leaves have been pressing themselves against my window.

  • I put lights on it for Christmas :p

Monstera Deliciosa Thai Constellation

  • Obtained: October 2024
  • Image Last Updated: March 2025
  • Notes: This plant had been #1 on my wishlist for years; finally found one that was *just barely* cheap enough to make it into my "affordable plant" threshold. Took a bit of a risk with it because these plants are very prone to root rot in juvenile stages. I love this plant sooooo much.

Feeling very enthusiastic about its most recent leaf. I really like the dappled look of the low variegation leaves!!! It's a lot bigger than the last leaf too... B')

  • I worry about this fricking thing's roots SO much but this is what it already looked like 3 weeks after repotting!! Budddddddy!! (I'm still so worried!!!!)

Philodendron Atabapoense (Hybrid?)

  • Obtained: May 2025
  • Image Last Updated: May 2025
  • Notes: A "walking along and stopping dead in my tracks the moment I saw it"-variety of plant purchase. It was unlabelled and the last one in stock, but the greenhouse lady seemed to remember it being a hybrid or specific variety of Ata. (Also she...gave it to me for $7, even though I'm willing to bet they were originally selling them for at least twice that... thank you )

Looking around on the internet, it seems like it was really popular for a while to hybridize Atabapoense & Billietiaes to try to recreate Spiritus Sanctis. But this plant doesn't really seem to have any Billie features to me. Idk!

Anyway I reallllyyyyy love the reddish undersides. Combined with the gray-ish green frontsides, it's just a really cool combination. The spade-like shapes of the leaves and how some of them are ruffled!!!! The whole thing kind of reminds me of an art sculpture.

Philodendron Birkin

  • Obtained: September 2024
  • Image Last Updated: March 2025
  • Notes: Started as a teeny NO ID plant that I got out of a terrarium section. Had the thought, "this looks like a philodendron, it would be cool if I could raise something so little into into something big." It eventually started putting out those signature white stripes!!!! One of my favorite plants.

Philodendron Paraiso Verde

  • Obtained: September 2024
  • Image Last Updated: May 2025
  • Notes: This plant grows like a weed, even in my kind of crappy lowlight window. The variegation is dependent not only on light, but also heat!! Which is really interesting! 100% of the leaves it's put out since I got it have been green (it is very cold here as I'm typing this. I would theoretically like to scoot it away from my window and put it under a growlight (I do not have a big growlight at the moment though).

Most recent repot of this thing feels like with every possible 'this or that' choice I made I picked the wrong one, oof!!! The new support pole is unsteady (and ugly). I didn't do a cover pot setup, hoping that putting it directly into the pot would help with stability (this worked with my monstera. But not this plant). This, this is learning for next time...I will just keep telling myself that...

(Also, featuring a cameo from my cat's butt)

Philodendron Prince of Orange

  • Obtained: November 2024
  • Image Last Updated: May 2025
  • Notes: I...apparently did not take a picture of this plant when I first got it and it actually had orange! Dang!

My brain did not really register the orange of this plant as "variegation," since it eventually turns green. I mistakenly thought it could live in the same window as my monstera & be cool with it. Turns out it needs a lot more light! It's been slowing readjusting since I put it in a cabinet. I kinda like how the green leaves sorta have a slight pinkish tint to them once they're done fading.

...People on the internet apparently abbreviate this plant's name as "POO."

Philodendron White Princess

  • Obtained: March 2024
  • Image Last Updated: May 2025
  • Notes: A gift from my mom. I wonder if it's in bad taste to say this plant lives up to its name in comparison to the average health of a European child monarch in the 1500s. Its green leaves are always getting stuck, while its pure white parasitic leaves are the ones that come out looking immaculate. I was having a hard time cutting them off 'cuz they were the only nice looking parts of the plant for a while.

It's been doing better since I put it in my greenhouse cabinet, but even then the leaves have still been coming out a little funky. I suspected pests, but it's been like this for so long and I haven't been finding signs of an actual infestation. I recently cut the top leaves off just in case, since those were the most affected. That...seemed to help?

Hang in there, you fickle little princess.

  • Holy crap this thing was beautiful the day I brought it home...SORRY TO THIS PLANT...

Rhapidophora Decursiva Dragon's Tail

  • Obtained: February 2025
  • Image Last Updated: February 2025
  • Notes: Was kind of an uncommonly strong "love at first sight" with this plant, then I googled what its mature leaves looked like and it was an Instant Fave for me. I'm assuming this plant is the "monstera's less popular cousin" because of its tendency to put out long runners (looking for something to climb up), but GOSH I love this thing. The glossy baby leaves are so pretty and the mature form is like...the platonic ideal of what I want from a houseplant (palm-like leaves without being fragile like actual indoor palms). I really hope it does well in my home.

  • Speaking of runners...

Syngonium Wendlandii

  • Obtained: August 2024
  • Image Last Updated: May 2025
  • Notes:
Pros: $4 clearance plant woohoooo looks really good on my cabinet woohooooooooo
Cons: I'm pretty sure this plant gave my calatheas spidermites & and also it shed all of its cute baby leaves almost immediately and went to its mature form 'cuz I took too good of care of it.

Recently it has been putting out smaller cute leaves again. :') I...I probably shouldn't be happy about that, but...

Also it's making a new little baby??? I didn't know they could grow like this:

  • Look how cute the baby leaves were......

ZZ Plant (Large)

  • Obtained: April 2024
  • Image Last Updated: March 2025
  • Notes: Found it at a really nice price for its size. Within a month it doubled the number of shoots it had!! Love that I only have to water this thing every 2 months.

ZZ Plant (Small)

  • Obtained: May 2024
  • Image Last Updated: March 2025
  • Notes: Already had the Big ZZ, but this one was little and cute and having a lowlight plant I could just fit on a desk or whatever had a deep appeal.
